Come on...we live in Chicago...the Eyeball is unique! Time Out magazine even had a photo contest to enter. Hhhmmm, guess it wasn't my photo that won since I haven't heard a word. We should appreciate all of the fun and cool sculptures that Chicago has around the city!!! I look forward forward to the next one.
I was a little skeptical of the eyeball, as 1. the location in the financial district is a bit out of the way for touristy types and 2. I didn't understand what the artist was trying to get at. But last weekend, my sister and her 4-year-old son visited me in Chicago -- and the only thing the little guy wanted to see was "The big, enormous eyeball!" --- So we went. The look on his face when he saw it has had me smiling for days. So I have no problem with the eyeball anymore!
The Eye isn't my favorite sculpture...but I have to admit, it's pretty cool. I can understand how people who live by it, or have to look at it constantly would be unhappy, but its far more interesting than a typical city monument. Often, the best art pieces are the ones that simply cause a reaction and get people thinking. Chicago is such a unique city--Tony Tasset has just given us one more reason to say so.

Turns out out love/hate of the eye is part of a larger conversation about the value (and cost) of public art.

August 23, 2010 - 11:48amKind of cool to have random, odd artwork like this in the city, but I don't think I want to see those veins up close - Sick!

July 21, 2010 - 9:57amI'm not a fan. Seems out of place and unnecessary.
July 20, 2010 - 9:50amI think it's great. It reflects the world we are living in - being watched all the time. Plus it's just neat!
