How do I get a summer tan without the health risks?

I have been researching/asking everyone about self tanners.  Now that summer is here, I want some color without having to head outside or back to the tanning beds (an old bad habit).  I don't want to end up looking like the simulation I saw of myself in 50 years at the Museum of Science and Industry!

I am very light skinned and feel that I look healthier with a little glow, but I don't want to increase my risk for skin cancer. I just had a friend diagnosed with it.

There are actually quite a few sunless tanners out there now that don't smell awful and are easy to apply. My top tips are super exfoliation in the shower beforehand, letting a little moisturizing lotion set in before applying the tanner, and then applying a thin, even coat of tanner. I like Loreal, Ulta and Neutrogena. Don't forget to wash your hands after applying!

Great tips. Would you recommend any specifically for the face? I am nervous I will turn myself orange and streaky. I can live with it on my arms/legs but not my face.

try a little bronzer on your cheeks, chin and nose tip and a little Alba Sunless Lotion on your arms and legs.

p.s. wear yellow for sun-kissed effect.

Why not just get a little dose of the real thing? A few hours a week of sun seems healthy to me, just avoid burning. I'm clearly not a doctor and yes, I was a teenager in the '80's.

Neutrogena makes a spray tanner that you can get for about $10 at CVS, Walgreens, etc. It goes on even & no cream application, so no orange hands!
