Several urban coyotes have recenty been spotted in the neighborhoods surrounding Budlong Woods and near Swedish Covenant Hospital. The Chicago Tribune reported that the coyotes were heard howling in response to ambulance sirens heading toward the Emergency Department of the hospital. The article also details the mixed feelings North siders have about these creatures.

What do you think of the increasing number of coyotes in the city?

The Trib article talks about people being afraid of coyotes -- and for those with outdoor cats and small dogs, I can understand to an extent. But a coyote is not going to attack a person or a child. (That said, it's hard to predict what any wild animal will do when it's being fed bologna by hand).
Anyway, I think it's great that coyotes are coming back. Natural predators are a good thing -- they help keep the rodent population down, and they really don't bother people.
It's fiction, but Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver is an interesting novel with lots of information about coyotes tucked in there. It's an easy read.
