Playing games and doing mental push-ups

Well Community staff came across this story in the Chicago Tribune and couldn’t help reflecting back on our Stroke of Genius article from a few months back.

Marbles: The Brain Store (with locations in Lincoln Square and in the Old Orchard Mall) is gaining momentum and expanding as Chicago’s Baby Boomers search for new ways to keep their minds sharp, and prevent and treat conditions like stroke, Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia.

This trend was not surprising to our staff, who had the pleasure of meeting Edgewater resident Paul Hasenwinkel and seeing the progress he has made since suffering a stroke in 2009. Brain fitness activities were an important part of Paul’s rehabilitation (along with extensive speech and occupational therapy at Swedish Covenant Hospital), and he made us believers. Truly, brain fitness is not just about the games (although they are fun). It is an engaging, low-cost, low-risk therapy for the mind that can yield some amazing results.

What do you do to keep your mind sharp? We want to hear from you!
