Physical therapy’s best mirror trick

Mirror therapy provides new treatment option for limb injuries
Well Community staff

Just weeks after her second child was born, Kim Gayeski, 39, of Albany Park, sustained severe nerve damage in her arm.

She was devastated to learn that she may not be able to carry her newborn or play with her 3-year-old son, as several neurologists told her regaining motion in her arm could take years.
So Kim began rehabilitation at Swedish Covenant Hospital and was introduced to mirror therapy. One year later, she has full use of her arm.

Kim's story — along with input from her occupational therapist Eileen Brusso, and Dr. Ketki Modi, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician at Swedish Covenant Hospital — was recently featured on ABC 7's weekly Healthbeat.

Check out the video and full text of the report, “Tricking the mind with mirrors”, then let us know what you think.

My Mom had a freak accident and suffered a life altering injury to her dominant shoulder/arm/hand. The physician who performed the rotator cuff surgery highly recommended Eileen as her thrapist - - - he was correct, she's amazing!!  Eileen will go to any extreme to help her patients. She created special sleeping apparatuses, stretching braces, etc. Eileen is one heck of a talented, caring and passionate therapist!! Our family holds the surgeon and Eileen in very high regard; if not for them Mom would have had a useless limb.
